• 08003683313 - 0800 3683 3131 Late yesterday afternoon, I answered a call from an 0800 number. A Scottish man introduced himself as being from Lloyds Bank fraud prevention team. He knew my name and wanted to discuss potential fraudulent activity on my account. I told him that I didn't have an account with Lloyds. He then told me the last three numbers of an account that was jointly held with My wife. This account has been my wife's account since 1993 and we have used it as the primary household account since 2007. She did attempt to change the surname on the account to mine that same year (as she did with all other institutions), but Lloyds would not allow this without a marriage certificate. So it remained in her maiden name until couple of months ago when it was changed following our marriage. But, as far I was aware, my name had not been added to the account, it certainly isn't on the debit card. So anyway, I explained this to the man on the phone, who assured me that it was now a joint account. He asked whether we knew anything about a £22,000 payment to 'Mohammed Builders'. I told him that we didn't. 'Do you have any building work being done at the moment?' 'No, we live in a council property.' 'As a security measure, can you tell me roughly how much is in the account at present?' I replied with a rough estimate. 'Broke then?' I wouldn't say broke, but I replied with a 'yes'. 'So when exactly did the marriage take place?' 'May the 30th' 'And can I just ask how long you've been together?' 'Almost 17 years' '(Gasp) What took you so long?' 'Life got in the way a lot' 'Well, thank you for your time, I've stopped the payment going through. And I hope you have a very happy marriage, and have a good evening.' 'You too, and I'm sorry about my attitude at the beginning of your call. I thought that it was a scam call.' 'That's fine, you can never be too sure. Goodbye and take care.' It was a scam call. I contacted Lloyds Bank and they assured me that they do not phone account holders out of the blue concerning suspected fraud. They would send a text first/message through the app. He confirmed that it was a scam call, although it wasn't of a kind reported to them previously. They hadn't heard of those kind of questions being asked before, and normally personal details such as debit card information are requested or the potential victim is asked to make a phone call. He told me that there are a number of sources from which scammers can discover the bank account number, but they can't really do anything with that.
