If it's a recorded message, it'll nearly always be a scam or a computer that dials a batch of numbers in sequence to ascertain if the number called is a voice line and if so, then the computer will record that number and add it to a list for an agent to call back or worse, add it to a list of numbers to be sold. NEVER EVER give any personal information to anyone who phones that you don't know! They may say it's important, so in that case tell them to write to you but never offer your address. They will almost certainly start fishing for further information and may ask things like, "Are you Mr/Mrs ......?" DON'T GIVE ANY INFORMATION! "Do you live at...?", "Are you the house-holder?" Again don't give any information! You can ask who they are if you wish and why they are calling you? Don't worry about being polite either, you can also hang up at any time. However if you're game, try and waste as much of their time as possible. A good ruse my neighbour often uses is to pretend he's totally nuts or has dementia, replying to their questions with things like, "I don't know, my brother is leaving soon for today's moon flight and I have to make his sandwiches." or another, "My nurse is arriving soon, I'll put her on the phone when she arrives just hang on please." Then leave the phone off the hook. It's absolutely guaranteed that any responses like this will drive your caller crazy as it becomes clear that they will be very unlikely to scam you and usually won't bother to phone again. These parasites have to make so many calls an hour, so the more of their time you can waste the better for everyone else, you might even consider that by wasting their time you're performing a public service. It's also a great way of getting some payback for all the nuisance calls you've been getting, believe me when I say that it really does (excuse the French) **** them off! The scammers will often use different numbers. If they say they are your bank... whatever the reason, never give them any information! Use your neighbours phone and 'never your own' to call the bank and NEVER EVER use the phone they just called you on. It's always best to go directly into your bank and speak to someone. Finally if you set up a Facebook or other social media account, NEVER provide your true date of birth, and ideally NEVER your real name either, always use an alias - that your friends would recognize. Be careful of facial photographs too, they can be used to generate fake computer made passes. Facebook and similar platforms are absolute goldmines for scammers and other rogues who like to mine your online pages and acquire lots of interesting facts about you, that can then be used to create a clone of you for all sorts of illegal activities.
